Discover our lineup of winter events and plan your visit

winter at the park

Step into the changing landscapes of Cornwall Park this winter to connect with te taiao, local history, and the season of Matariki. From self-guided adventures through the park, to reflective hīkoi beneath the winter sky, we invite you to explore and experience the unique atmosphere during the cooler months.

Whether you are searching for seasonal treasures on the winter scavenger hunt walking to the tihi guided by the whetū of Matariki, or stepping back in time through our new exhibition that celebrates the gift that made Cornwall Park possible, each experience offers an opportunity to see the park with fresh eyes.

Winter Scavenger Hunt

1 June – 31 August

Location: Park-wide (pick up a sheet from Huia Lodge or print at home)

Our winter scavenger hunt kicks off on 1 June and runs all winter. Collect a scavenger hunt sheet from Huia Lodge or print one at home. Use it to explore the park and discover our winter delights.

This self-led activity suits the young and young at heart. Take your time and find a new delight each visit or race your friends and whānau to see who can find them all the fastest.

The clues lead you around the park to different accessible locations. Bring your own pen or pencil.

Maungakiekie Self Guided Hīkoi for Matariki

8 - 12 July 5-7am

Location: Starts at Huia Lodge Discovery Hub in Cornwall Park or Te Whatu Stardome in Maungakiekie One Tree Hill Domain
Reach the tihi by 6am to view Matariki before the sun rises.

This Matariki, you are invited to experience a special self guided hīkoi to the tihi (summit) following the tohū (signs) of the Matariki whetū (stars) in te taiao (the natural world). We encourage you to slow down and use your senses – listening for wildlife in the darkness, feeling the gentle breeze, and noticing the changing environment around you on this walk.

The journey symbolically moves from te Pō (the night) into te Ao Mārama (the world of light), mirroring the rising of Matariki and the Māori new year.

For more information visit our Matariki event page.

125-Year Exhibition: An Enduring Gift

10 June – 31 October

Location: Huia Lodge Discovery Hub

Thursday – Tuesday 10am-4pm, Wednesday 12-4pm

This year marks 125 years since the first of three important milestones in Cornwall Park’s history, the signing of the Deed of Gift that made Cornwall Park possible.

As part of our anniversary celebrations, the Huia Lodge Discovery Hub is proud to present a brand-new interactive exhibition, “An Enduring Gift”. Inspired by Sir John Logan Campbell’s personal writings and the early history of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, this exhibition invites you to step directly into Sir John’s shoes and discover how a visionary choice shaped the city forever.
