Cornwall Park Endowment and Recreation Land Amendment Bill

About the proposed legislation

Cornwall Park Trust Board is seeking to amend the Cornwall Park Endowment and Recreation Land Act 1982 by the Cornwall Park Endowment and Recreation Land Amendment Bill.

Cornwall Park is not funded by ratepayers or taxpayers, and income from endowment land supports the Park's ongoing care and maintenance.

The Bill's sole purpose is to modernise obsolete statutory restrictions that apply to the eastern side of the Greenlane Showgrounds so the Board can begin future planning under normal planning processes.

Questions and answers

1. Why is the Board seeking this change?
The current statutory settings are outdated and constrain the Board's ability to plan responsibly for the endowment land that supports Cornwall Park.

2. What exactly would change if the Bill is passed?
The Bill would remove obsolete statutory restrictions affecting the eastern side of the Greenlane Showgrounds. It does not decide any future use for the site or remove normal planning requirements.

3. What land is affected?
The Bill relates to the eastern side of the Greenlane Showgrounds:

4. Does this affect the whole of Cornwall Park?
No. Only the eastern side of the Showgrounds is affected, not the rest of the Park or the sports fields north of Puriri Drive.

5. Does this affect public access to Cornwall Park?
No. The changes do not impact public access to Cornwall Park.

6. Does this mean current events at the Showgrounds are ending?
No. Existing arrangements remain in place and the Board is in negotiations with the current showground operator to extend its lease until early 2032.

7. How can I have a say?
The proposed legislation will go through a normal parliamentary select committee process where the public can provide submissions on the proposed legislation. More information on that will be provided in due course.
