Where to see Cherry Blossoms in New Zealand in Spring

Spring is nature’s time for renewal. And nothing symbolises new beginnings better during this time of year than the beautiful, fleeting display of cherry blossoms. The delicate pink and white blooms, known as sakura in Japan, are a symbol of hope and the cycle of life, appearing in parks and gardens across the country and drawing in locals and tourists for a moment of seasonal magic. While a trip to Japan may be off the cards, you don't have to travel far to experience your own version of “Hanami” (flower viewing) in New Zealand. From sprawling urban parks to tranquil hidden gardens, here are the best places to see the beautiful cherry blossoms in Aotearoa.

1. Cornwall Park, Auckland
Our very own Cornwall Park is one of the go-to destinations for cherry blossom enthusiasts, with its annual display heralding the arrival of spring. The blossoms typically burst into bloom from mid-September to early October, transforming the park with a delicate wash of pink. While the peak flowering period lasts about four weeks, its duration is highly dependent on the weather, with a cold snap and subsequent sunshine providing ideal conditions for a stunning display. The park even tracks the weather to predict the best viewing times.
Cornwall Park is home to several different species of cherry trees, first planted more than 50 years ago, with each variety contributing its unique beauty to the display. The Prunus x yedoensis “Awanui” is known for its masses of large, single blossoms with a subtle pink tint. The Prunus “Accolade” offers semi-double, rich pink flowers on bare stems. For those seeking an earlier show, the Prunus campanulata “Taiwanese Cherry” blooms in August with deep pink flowers that tūī love!
The park features two main locations for blossom viewing. The largest stand of trees is found next to Pōhutukawa Drive, a popular spot that can get quite busy. A second, smaller collection is located on Pūriri Drive, offering a quieter and often less-crowded alternative. To avoid the traffic and parking challenges that arise on sunny weekends, visitors are encouraged to use public transport, park on surrounding streets and walk in, or, for a quick view, head directly to the Pūriri Drive location. Weekday visits are also a great option for a more Zen-like experience.

2. Auckland Botanic Gardens
The Auckland Botanic Gardens are an essential stop for cherry blossom admirers. The gardens are home to a grove of exquisite “Awanui” cherry trees that gradually open their blooms throughout early to mid-spring. This creates a magical spectacle that visitors can wander through. The gardens have provided in the past a "cherry blossom watch" to help visitors plan their trip and ensure they don't miss the peak bloom. With more than 10,000 plants from around the world, the Botanic Gardens offer a fantastic opportunity to not only see the blossoms but also to explore a vast and diverse plant collection.
