Our summer tai chi sessions at Cornwall Park reached new heights this year. Attendance shattered previous records with a diverse turnout, including the return of our specifically designed sessions for blind and low-vision participants.

Held this year within the park’s lush surroundings from January to March, our tai chi classes offer a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature while practicing gentle movement. Suitable for all skill levels – especially beginners – the sessions are free, family-friendly, and require no special equipment or clothing.

Expert instructor Jocelyn Watkin and her team from Kia Ora Tai Chi have led this wellbeing initiative for nine seasons, watching the community grow stronger each year.

“By the end of our first summer in 2017, I had welcomed 105 participants,” Jocelyn recalls. “This past summer has been extraordinary, with 1066 participants – well surpassing last year’s record of 738.

"We had everyone from busy professionals and curious tourists to cyclists who paused their rides to join in.”

The park has hosted tai chi for almost a decade.

For the past two years, Jocelyn has also offered accessible sessions for those who are blind or have low vision.

“Participants often speak of feeling calmer, stronger, and more balanced,” she says. "One participant, recovering from back surgery, shared how each session helped him to reduce stiffness and restore movement.

“These sessions have become a welcoming, supportive community, made possible by the enthusiasm of participants, the support of my co-instructors (Barry, Pauline, and Juliana), and the commitment of Cornwall Park’s events team to offer this experience freely to all.”

What the community is saying

The positive feedback from this summer reflects the inclusive and supportive environment Jocelyn and her team have fostered:

  • “Given my age, hip replacement, and blindness, I knew I had to improve my balance. Jocelyn and Pauline’s instructions are addressing all of these. They give clear, easy-to-follow directions and guide me through touch when needed.”
  • “What a fabulous summer of tai chi – thank you for guiding us. Can’t wait for next year!”
  • “You’re an incredibly inclusive, encouraging, and knowledgeable teacher. We already feel the benefits in terms of flexibility, balance, and calm."
