new tihi (summit) track on Maungakiekie One Tree Hill

We’re building a new link to the tihi (summit) track up Maungakiekie One Tree Hill through Cornwall Park. This will create a safer, more attractive and less damaging walk up the maunga to the peak.

The new path will take an alternative route from behind Huia Lodge and be more direct.

We’re doing this because an informal ‘desire line’ (path of least resistance) has been created by people clambering up the maunga. This is creating damaging erosion, is not safe - especially after rain – and is destabilising important archeological sites. We must take steps to protect these precious areas.

That’s why we’re building a new and improved track. This new track will offer stunning views of Rangitoto, Maungawhau Mt Eden, Ohinerau Mt. Hobson and Te Kōpuke Mount Saint John along the way.

The new track will feature boardwalks and stairs. It will be much safer and easier to access and walk for a wider range of abilities, and provide places to stop, take photos and admire the views more safely. It will help protect the soil, prevent damaging erosion and save treasured archeological features such as kumara pits and middens. Human bones have also been found on the maunga.

We hope to have this completed by winter 2026. In the meantime, we’re putting up fencing to stop people accessing the route. We’re also putting soil erosion mitigations in place to allow the ground to stabilise.

Please get to the summit via the Summit Road accessed from Olive Grove Road. We’ll keep you posted as the new track progresses – but this is the first step in the process to build an exciting new feature that adds to delivering a great visitor experience.
