Five Must-Do Activities for This Autumn

As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, autumn is the perfect time to enjoy nature, offering a perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures and serene moments. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photography lover, or someone simply looking to soak in the beauty of the season, there's something truly special about spending time in the park during autumn. Here are five things you should check out this season:

1. Misty Mornings
There's something special about misty mornings in the park during autumn. It's a great time for a peaceful walk, where you can enjoy the quiet beauty of nature. You may even catch a glimpse of our farm animals along the way. A great way to start the day! Our park gates open from 7am and close between 6-7pm in Autumn.

2. Take in the Autumn Leaves
The park's trees put on a stunning show as they change colour. Walk through our ginkgo grove as the leaves turn from a vibrant green to a rich yellow in late May, before fluttering to the ground like a yellow carpet.
Our liquid amber trees transform into a spectacular tapestry of colour in the fall, including yellows, oranges, reds, and purples. Renowned for their stunning autumn foliage displays, this is a great time to take photos and capture these moments or just listen to the leaves crunch under your feet.

3. Check Out Huia Lodge's Autumn Exhibition
Rain or shine make sure to visit Huia Lodge, open daily from 10 am to 4 pm. This autumn, the Buller's Birds Exhibition is a must-see as it combines art, nature, and history, making it perfect for families and nature lovers.
While you’re there, find out where our farm animals are and learn about volcanoes in the lava cave.

4. Notice the sheep’s new hair do
As winter nears, our sheep get shorn in May. This encourages them to eat more to ensure our expectant ewes have the nutrition they need for their lambs when they are born in August. It also reduces the chance of illnesses like flystrike. Stop by Huia Lodge to find out where the sheep are each day.

5. Go Bird Watching
With over 30 bird species in Cornwall Park, birdwatching is a fun autumn activity. The park is a key stop for migrating birds in Auckland and you'll see lots more birds gathered in flocks helping one another find food before winter. Download our bird brochure to help identify the birds you see. Whether you're an avid bird watcher or just curious, it's a great way to enjoy nature and learn about the local birdlife.
