Forest Therapy: Nature Connection Walk

Forest Therapy is a guided practice that supports healing and wellness through immersion in natural environments. Forest Therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, which translates to 'forest bathing'. A group walk usually consists of 5-10 people and is a great way to not only connect with nature but also connect with other people.

The walk follows a standard sequence of guided meditation, invitations to establish sensual connections, a few rounds of circle sharing and ends with a tea ceremony. No prior experience is needed. Typically a walk is 2.5-3 hour in duration and covers about 2km. The walk is not physically strenuous so it should be accessible for most people.

To minimise disruptions to the group, full participation of the entire period is strongly recommended.

Dress comfortably, bring water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Inform us if you have any dietary requirements.

The meeting point will be in front of the Huia Lodge next to the Bistro on Michael Horton Drive. Please be on time. Latecomers may be disruptive to the group and the guide reserves the right to deny their participation.

For over a decade Yaki has worked for non-profit organisations globally, first as a human rights campaigner, later as an environmental policy researcher, grantmaker and consultant in the area of climate change. Having grown up and lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Toronto, and London as an urbanite, New Zealand’s proximity to nature opened up her senses like never before. When her mother fell ill in 2016 and passed away in 2018, she sought solace in nature and responded to her calling by training to become a nature and forest therapy guide. Yaki believes that nature and forest therapy deepens our understanding that we all interrelate in a dynamic system. Such understanding is fundamental to the reconnections to the self, others, and nature necessary to tackling the social, economic and environmental challenges we are facing today.
